Step 5. To add more emphasis I decided to darken the corners. To create a vignette, I used the Elliptical Marquee tool to select a large area around the portrait and then inversed this and feathered it by 150 pixels. In order to darken the corners, I made an Adjustment Layer, selected Curves and gently pulled the curve downwards. Finally a small amount of Unsharp Mask was applied to give the grain added crispness.

Finished image. The Film Noir style creates a definite mood reminiscent of the dark movies of the 1940s and 50s. It certainly is one of those techniques that requires a most careful choice of subject.
